A Meal With a Revenge; Pendjari National Parc, Benin

Aug32014

We planned to visit the Pendjari National Park. As the rainy season started we were afraid the roads might not be practicable and the park closed. However, we learned that there shouldn’t be any problems and that even the hotel in the middle of the park was open. Well, we were not very keen on that hotel as the hotel never has been too keen on any guests. Already 7 years ago it was in a slightly desperate condition, full of bats and last time we visited we were woken up in the middle of the night as their generator house was burning (the burnt machine is still lying around as a kind of proof of evidence). Nevertheless it was fine to go once more on safari. In the afternoon an angry elephant was roaming around the bungalows, blocking the way out of the camp. Finally we were able to leave and visited some elephant herds, some springboks, a lot of Tse Tse flies and – back in our hotel with a beer – the hell a lot of hungry mozzies.

We were the only and probably for quite some time the first guests to stay overnight. In all those years the menu had not changed – spaghetti with tomato sauce or guinea fowl with fries. As non-vegetarians we opted for the second choice and probably ended up with the same guinea fowl that already was in the fridge on our last visit some 7 years ago. We celebrated the dead bird with a bottle of rotten grapes: It was delicious, so were the stomach problems a few hours later.
